Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Demolition of Macroom Castle.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will accept liability for the expenditure of Macroom Urban Council on the demolition of Macroom Castle, County Cork.

While I cannot accept responsibility for the expenditure involved in the demolition of the structure referred to by the Deputy, I am having the possibility of giving some assistance towards the costs involved investigated.

I am glad to hear the Minister's reply. Is he aware that the total expenditure involved is, as I understand, £2,700? As it is not possible to trace the legal owner of the castle, such a burden would be very heavy on the taxpayers. Am I to assume from the Minister's reply that a subvention will be given towards the cost? I think the Minister would be justified in asking the Central Fund to bear the full cost.

It is being investigated.

When will we hear?

Shortly.
