Vol. 231 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing for Dublin Army Personnel.

40.

asked the Minister for Defence where, when and to what extent houses will be built by his Department in Dublin for Army personnel.

The provision of houses for soldiers is primarily a matter for local authorities and a soldier has an equal claim on local authority houses with any member of the community in the same income group. The policy of my Department is to supplement the efforts of local authorities where the need is greatest and housing schemes have already been completed at a number of centres including a scheme of 88 houses in Dublin. It is not possible to say when further new married quarters will be erected in Dublin but the needs of this centre will receive full consideration in the light of the circumstances obtaining when a decision is being taken in relation to the location of the next housing scheme.
