Vol. 231 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry.

11.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of people employed (a) permanently and (b) on a part-time basis in the various branches of the fishing industry in 1966; the number employed in Bord Iascaigh Mhara; and the number employed in the Inland Fisheries Trust.

In the year 1966, there were 5,261 persons employed in sea fishing and 6,011 in inland fishing. Fishing is largely a part-time occupation and, except for 1,634 full-time sea fishermen, most of the persons concerned were engaged in fishing for only part of their time.

Statistics are not available as to the number employed in the processing of fish in 1966, but the number is estimated to have been about 500.

The numbers of persons employed in An Bord Iascaigh Mhara and in the Inland Fisheries Trust in 1966 were 338 and 108, respectively.

Can the Minister say if this represents a fairly substantial increase in numbers over the previous year?

I have not got the comparison for the previous year, but let me say that I will be disappointed if it does not show an upward trend for some time.

12.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the total capital investment in the fishing industry in the past ten years.

The only information on total capital investment in the fishing industry available in my Department is that the total investment in fishing boats and gear and the investment by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara in boatyards, ice plants and fish-processing plants in the ten-year period from 1957 to 1966, inclusive, amounted to £2,292,463.
