Vol. 231 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decimal Currency.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has studied the recommendations of the Federation of Irish industries on decimal currency with special reference to the recommendation that the florin-cent system is the best; and what his views on this system are.

As I already indicated in reply to a question on 19th October, I have received submissions from over 200 individuals, firms and organisations, including the Federation of Irish Industries, in support of the adoption of one or other of the units on which it would be possible to base a decimal currency in this country. These submissions are at present being studied in my Department.

The case for and against the florin-cent system was summarised in the booklet "Decimal Currency: Choice of Unit" which I issued in June last.
