Vol. 232 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Low Cost Imports.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received representations from traders and manufacturers concerning the effect of low cost imports on industry; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I have from time to time received representations against particular low cost imports. Imports of certain low-cost goods are already restricted by means of quotas and duties including minimum specific duties in cases where ad valorem duties would not be effective. I am at present considering the question of extending import control to other low cost imports in respect of which representations have been made to me.

In that case can the Minister take action speedily so as to prevent damage to industry due to such imports?

Yes. The Deputy may take it that action will be taken quite soon.
