Vol. 232 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of Health Services.

35.

asked the Minister for Health if, with regard to the implementation of the proposal for extension of the health services, he can indicate whether discussions with the medical and pharmaceutical professions have reached a stage where the Dáil can be informed of the progress made.

Mr. O'Malley

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the proposed new general medical services scheme. I would prefer not to make a detailed statement on this matter just now. Discussions are still going on between the organisations representing the professions and officials of my Department and progress to date has been generally satisfactory.

I hope to meet again representatives of the medical profession during the next few weeks to discuss with them any matters regarding the proposed new scheme which may not have been resolved in the talks with my officials.

I expect that the discussions with the pharmaceutical profession will also be concluded soon and that there will emerge an acceptable scheme for the purchase, distribution and supply of drugs and medicines under the scheme. The House will be informed of the outcome of these discussions in due course.
