Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Education of Slow-Learning Children.

50.

asked the Minister for Education if any financial help may be given to parents of slow-learning children to provide extra tuition so that these children will not be unduly handicapped.

The assistance which my Department gives towards the education of slow-learners consists mainly of providing special classes for them, particularly, in larger national schools. A very favourable pupil/ teacher ratio is authorised in the case of such classes. Group teaching which is making steady progress admits of special attention being given to slow learners.

The question of making special grants in individual cases is for practical and other reasons something that could not be favourably considered.
