Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Training of Student Nurses.

67.

asked the Minister for Health if he will now make arrangements so that credit will be given to student nurses for previous training outside Ireland; and if he will state in particular when Dublin Health Authority will receive a reply to their request that credit should be given for such training.

I am aware that the making of arrangements to give credit to student nurses for previous training outside Ireland was raised in December last by Dublin Health Authority with An Bord Altranais.

In reply the health authority were written to in the following terms: "This matter has, from time to time, been considered by An Bord, but the members were of opinion that it would, in the long run, be to the detriment of Irish Nurse Training."

This is a matter primarily for An Bord Altranais which is the statutory body responsible for the control of training and for the registration of nurses in this country.

I have no functions in this matter unless the board decided to grant this credit and drafted rules to give effect to this decision. Such rules would be subject to my approval. The board, however, asked for my advice about it but I do not propose to dissuade the board from the opinion which they had already reached.
