Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows in Civil Service.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to ensure that widows in Civil Service employment who have dependants receive remuneration appropriate to their married status as in the case of married male employees.

A claim on this subject is at present being dealt with under the scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service.

Would the Minister agree that there is an injustice at present in regard to cases where widows who have dependants are not given the same conditions of employment as obtain for married men?

The Minister suggests that this matter should be left to the proper machinery for dealing with it, the conciliation and arbitration machinery for the Civil Service.

I hope the Minister will bear the point in mind in any case.
