Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Kilmainham Jail.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of grants from public funds which has been given for the restoration of Kilmainham Jail, Dublin to date.

The restoration work at Kilmainham Jail is being undertaken voluntarily by the Kilmainham Jail Restoration Committee to the Trustees of which the premises have been leased since 21st May, 1960. The lease provides, inter alia, that the Trustees will, at their own expense and to the satisfaction of the Minister for Finance, restore the premises and establish an historical museum therein. The lease also provides for payment to the Trustees by the Commissioners of Public Works, with effect from 1964, of the sum of £1,000 per annum towards the cost of insuring the premises against fire, insuring the voluntary workers against injury, boiler insurance and maintenance. This is the only payment which has been made from State funds to the Restoration Committee.
