Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Education

74.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of current Government expenditure accounted for by the Estimate for his Department in 1931 and in 1967 respectively.

In the financial year 1930-31 the net expenditure from the Votes accounted for by my Department together with expenditure from the Vote for Universities was £4,564,868 or 21.81 per cent of the total net State Expenditure of £20,925,911. The comparable estimate for the financial year 1967-68 was £40,956,120 or 14.4 per cent of a total net State expenditure of £285,618,220.

Did the Minister mention a percentage of 21?

Yes, 21.81 per cent. We have increased the allocation by 1,000 per cent.

We are spending less.

From £4½ million to £40 million is as near as makes no difference to a 1,000 per cent increase in 37 odd years.

Question No. 75.

That may be so. Arising out of the Minister's reply——

I have called Question No. 75.
