Vol. 236 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Airfield.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has any plans for the development of an airport or a landing strip in or near Sligo town.

Development of aerodromes is a matter for local initiative or commercial enterprise and as indicated in my reply to Deputy Gilhawley on 18th June, 1968, in view of the considerable Exchequer investment in our existing three airports, I would have to find convincing evidence of worthwhile results before considering capital investment in another large scale airport.

Financial assistance by way of a grant from the Special Regional Development Fund is available for the establishment of local aerodromes in the under-developed western regions subject to compliance with certain conditions including evidence that the project is likely to be economically viable. Technical advice and guidance are available in my Department to any promoters proposing to establish an aerodrome. A survey is being undertaken to ensure that the zoning of private air fields is assured to avoid unnecessary overlapping, in view of the heavy cost to promoters and to the State.

Is this to facilitate further emigration?
