Vol. 236 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Schemes.

19.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the amount of money finally allocated to County Cavan for the current year under the Local Government (Roads and Drainage) Act, 1968, (b) the number of applications received by Cavan County Council under the Act, including those transferred from his Department, (c) the number of schemes which have actually been commenced by the county council since the Act came into operation and (d) the cause of the delay in attending to the applications received.

The information sought is as follows:—

(a) £30,000; (b) 363 at 14th October, 1968; (c) None; (d) I understand that the delay in attending to applications has been caused by local organisational difficulties in getting the Local Improvements Scheme into operation.

(Cavan): Is it not a fact that the delay in getting the scheme going is due to the fact that the Minister has refused to sanction a proposal put before him by Cavan County Council as far back as August last which would solve any difficulties there are and get the scheme going?

No. The county manager has been instructed to make arrangements to carry out the works and is being given every assistance by my Department.

(Cavan): Is not the truth of the matter that Cavan County Council reported to the Minister's Department that unless the Minister sanctioned a proposal submitted by the county manager as far back as August last the scheme could not be got under way and that that proposal is still lying in the Minister's Department and has not been dealt with and, as a result, these 316 schemes are lying there untouched and that included in these schemes are a number of dangerous bridges which may lead to fatalities if they are not attended to at once?

That is a separate question.

The county manager has been told that he will be given every assistance in getting the work carried out.

(Cavan): I wish to give notice that I intend to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
