Vol. 236 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) Traffic Lights.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need for hand-operated traffic lights at the entrance to the De La Salle Schools, Ballyfermot Road, Dublin, in view of the large numbers of children having to cross this fast-traffic road at this point.

The provision of pedestrian-operated light signals is a matter for the local authority acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Garda Commissioner.

Would the Minister not consider that he has an obligation to give me at least as lengthy and as civil a reply as was given to his pal in the back bench?

It is the same type of reply, I think.

It is not, in fact. I want to draw the Minister's attention to the fact, in case it escaped his notice, that this is a very dangerous point on this road and that there are literally many hundreds, if not thousands, of children who have to cross this road each day and it is suggested that the best possible method of ensuring their safety would be hand-operated traffic signals. Would the Minister, with his tremendous influence——

——not add his representations to mine to the city manager to have this facility provided without delay?

Yes, I will get in touch with one of the councillors for the area.

The councillors for the area?

Could the Minister not do it himself?

Would the Minister not think that he has an obligation to his constituents in that area to make direct representations to the city manager himself?

He is in touch with the councillor for the area.

Deputy Dunne should get in touch with an active councillor for the area.

I have done my job. I am asking the Minister to do his.

I shall bring it to the attention of one of the more active councillors in the area.

"Onassis" wants to speak.

Would the Minister not think of bringing it to the attention of the Labour Lord Mayor of Dublin?

Deputies

Hear, hear.

Would Deputy MacEntee not try to learn a little geography if nothing else?

Let us hope Dublin Corporation will now spend some time on matters with which they are concerned.

The Minister——

Would Deputy Dunne allow questions to continue?

(Interruptions.)
