Vol. 237 No. 7

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drogheda Harbour Development.

36.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will give details of the proposed harbour development scheme in Drogheda stating (a) its approximate cost, (b) how it will be financed, (c) the amount already spent and (d) when work of development is expected to commence.

On 24th October, 1968, Drogheda Harbour Commissioners submitted to me proposals for (i) the erection of a retaining wall on the south side of the river channel, (ii) the raising of an existing wall on the north side of the channel and (iii) dredging. These works are estimated to cost £155,000 and the proposals are at present under examination. The proposed works represent the final part of an improvement scheme, on which about £200,000 has been spent to date. A State grant of 50 per cent of the cost of the scheme, subject to a maximum of £175,000, has already been approved. The balance of the cost will be met by the harbour authority.

Provided the proposals are acceptable, and the necessary formalities completed in time, the Drogheda Harbour Commissioners hope to commence the work in April, 1969.

Did I hear the Parliamentary Secretary correctly? Did he say that £200,000 has already been spent?

The proposed works represent the final part of an improvement scheme on which about £200,000 has been spent to date.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary have that figure checked? I think it must be incorrect.

I can have the figure checked. That is the information I have.
