Vol. 238 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eradication of Foxes.

21.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he is aware of the large number of lambs being killed annually in South Kerry by foxes; and if he will investigate the feasibility of introducing a scheme to eradicate the foxes in consultation with the Forestry Division of the Department of Lands and the County Committee of Agriculture.

I am aware that lambs are killed by foxes from year to year in various parts of the country. Schemes for the destruction of foxes are operated with the approval of my Department by various County Committees of Agriculture. In County Kerry the committee has allocated grants to local organisations for the extermination of vermin, including foxes. The South Kerry Sheep Farmers' Association have, I understand, been offered a grant by the committee for fox destruction. I am prepared to continue support for County Committee of Agriculture schemes for fox eradication.
