Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Wall.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance whether steps will be taken to declare as a national monument and to preserve those portions of the old city wall of Dublin unearthed during recent excavations at Winetavern Street; if so, what steps; and, if not, why.

The archaeological excavations being carried out at Winetavern Street by the National Museum have uncovered what appears to be part of the original Norman city wall still in a good state of preservation. It was probably built in the twelfth century after the Normans had occupied the town.

As the Deputy is aware new civic offices are being planned for this site and the Office of Public Works proposes to discuss with the civic authorities the feasibility of preserving the wall as part of the development project.
