Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Representation at Expo 70.

62.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will outline the policy of the Government in relation to Ireland's representation at Expo 70 in Tokyo; if this policy differs from the Government's policy in relation to this country's representation at Expo 67 in Canada; if there is any change in policy, if he will give the reason for the change; and if he will outline the nature of Ireland's involvement in Expo 70 and the estimated cost of that involvement.

It was decided to participate in Expo 70 in Japan with the object of creating a greater awareness of Ireland with particular reference to export possibilities. The estimated contribution from the Exchequer towards the cost of participation, which is being shared by a number of exhibitors, is £15,000.

Towards the end of 1965 when it was necessary to take action to reduce the deficit in our balance of payments and it was clear that the original budget for participation in Expo 67 in Montreal would have to be revised upwards to £200,000, the Government decided that they must withdraw from participation in that exhibition.
