Vol. 248 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Child Health Service.

7.

asked the Minister for Health if he will list the specific ailments discovered during pre-school period for which free treatment is available irrespective of income.

At present, health authorities provide dental, ophthalmic and aural treatment and appliances, free of charge, to children whose need for such treatment or appliances is discovered at a child welfare clinic.

I intend to extend eligibility further and to make regulations under the new Health Act with the consent of the Minister for Finance, whereby children of any income group with specified long term disabilities such as mental handicap, cystic fibrosis and haemophilia would be entitled to in-patient treatment, out-patient specialist services, drugs, medicines and appliances, free of charge.
