Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - UN International Year.

17.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what contribution in money, activities or promotions of any kind will be given by the Government towards the United Nations sponsored International Year for action to combat racism or racial discrimination.

In respect of the international year in question the Government have decided to increase by over 80 per cent their contribution to the United Nations Trust Fund for South Africa the moneys from which are used for the relief and assistance of victims of apartheid. The Government also propose to contribute 5,000 dollars to the United Nations Training and Educational Programme for Southern Africans.

Further aspects of the programme for the year have not yet been finalised but consideration is being given to the issue of a postage stamp, to the dissemination in schools of information on the evils of racial discrimination and to a reassessment of this country's position in regard to the human rights instruments elaborated under the auspices of the United Nations.

Would the Minister state in money terms the value of the 80 per cent grant which is to be given to the United Nations?

If the Deputy would be prepared to ask another question I shall get that information. I have not got it here.
