Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Protection.

79.

asked the Minister for Defence what steps he intends to take to ensure continuity of protection to Irish fisheries inside territorial waters, when the present surface craft go out of commission.

80.

asked the Minister for Defence the present position about acquiring replacements for the vessels in the fishery protection fleet.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 79 and 80 together.

Negotiations are in progress with the British Ministry of Defence for the purchase of three vessels of the coastal minesweeper class. Arrangements have also been made for training, which commenced on the 26th ultimo, of key personnel on the operation of these vessels. The vessels would be used on fishery protection duties, for which they have been found suitable, in addition to their naval role as minesweepers. These vessels are in addition to the all-weather fishery protection vessel on order.

Did the Minister not tell us in this House some time ago that he intended to charter vessels to provide fishery protection while we were waiting for the delivery of the vessels that are supposed to be on order? What has happened about this?

This has been examined and we are satisfied that this is the most effective and suitable arrangement we could make.

Is the Minister aware that the British Navy will make minesweeper vessels available to him at a nominal charge in the interim?

That is not contemplated. Negotiations are proceeding satisfactorily.

Is the Minister aware that they are available for a nominal figure?

We do not contemplate investigating that possibility.

Is the Minister aware of it?

We expect to conclude negotiations in a satisfactory period of time.

How long does the Minister expect that fishery protection will be dependent on the "Maeve", which is already limping on its own?

We expect to conclude negotiations very early in the new year.

Does that mean there will be fishery protection available early in the new year?

No, it will be another four or five years.

Does that mean that the vessels will be available in January?

I said very early in the new year.

Negotiations only.

No, the vessels. The personnel are at present being trained.

When will we have the vessels?

Early in the new year, I expect.

81.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will make a statement about the current measures in operation for adequate fishery and coastal protection.

The Naval Service continues to afford fishery protection within the limits of its resources. At present such protection is effected by means of patrols by one corvette.

That answer is meant for Dublin Opinion only.
