Vol. 249 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Aliens.

45.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of aliens registered for permanent residence in the State at present.

The official records in relation to aliens in this country do not include citizens of the United Kingdom, citizens of British Commonwealth countries and citizens of South Africa, who are given various exemptions under statutory instruments made under the Aliens Act, 1935.

In relation to other aliens, the records relate to those registered with the Garda Síochána as resident here for three months or more. Alien wives and widows of Irish citizens and persons under 16 are not obliged to register with the Garda.

The latest figure compiled is that for 31st December last, on which date the number of persons registered as resident for upwards of three months was 4,722. Well over half this total are students or workers on short-term assignments here, or others who are not permanent residents in the usual sense of that term.
