Vol. 249 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Whiskey Sales.

44.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce why no Irish whiskey can be obtained in the South of Spain although many Irish people now go there for holidays while Scotch of all brands is freely available in supermarkets and bars.

I understand that in the past two years the Irish distillers have surveyed the Spanish market, appointed new importers and prepared plans in conjunction with the importers for increased sales of Irish whiskey in Spain. Their sales campaign has, however, been hampered by the fact that during the first six months of 1970 the Spanish Government for balance of payments reasons, restricted imports generally, including whiskey. The position has somewhat eased and imports of Irish whiskey recommenced in August.

I am delighted to have this information but could I ask the Minister to make some representations to his colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power, to have Irish whiskey served on BEA planes coming into Dublin?

That is a separate question.

I know, but it is relevant to the sale of Irish whiskey.

It does not arise.

I can bring the matter to his attention.

It is a much superior product to Scotch Whisky. I hope the Minister will be successful in his efforts.
