Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Accident Compensation.

109.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the considerable difficulties which face injured parties in traffic accidents in recovering compensation from or taking legal proceedings against British and other foreign incorporated companies operating mechanically propelled vehicles in Ireland; if he will require by legislation or otherwise that all such companies may be sued and made fully amenable at their Irish addresses; and if he will provide machinery whereby such vehicles may, if necessary, be arrested and impounded pending settlement of claims; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of difficulties of the kind referred to by the Deputy. If, however, he has information about any particular case or cases and furnishes me with details I shall have the matter investigated or, as may be appropriate, brought to the attention of the insurance industry committee established by the Minister for Industry and Commerce which body is open to receive submissions in regard to motor insurance.
