Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Traffic.

116.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will explain how it is proposed to operate the proposed ban on traffic in Dublin city centre; if consultations will be held with traders in the area who will be affected; and, if so, when.

117.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in connection with the proposed ban on traffic in Dublin city centre, arrangements will be made to enable goods to be delivered to traders in the area; and what steps will be taken to minimise inconvenience to local traders and loss of trade.

118.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any vehicles will be exempted from the proposed ban on traffic in Dublin city centre; and, if so, if he will give details.

119.

asked the Minister for Local Government what arrangements will be made to make CIE transport available in Dublin city centre during the proposed ban on traffic there.

I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 116, 117, 118 and 119 together.

I suggested recently that an experimental restriction on traffic in the city centre should be examined with a view to easing congestion in Dublin. The corporation and the other authorities concerned, the Garda and CIE are at present considering my suggestion and I hope to have a report in the matter very shortly. As the matter is still being examined it is too soon to make a detailed statement at this stage except to assure the Deputy and the public that the points raised in the Deputy's questions and all other relevant considerations have been receiving careful study. There will be an opportunity for full consultation with all interests before implementing any experiments or major changes.
