Vol. 251 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Airport for North-West.

20.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether any feasibility studies have been undertaken on the question of a civil airport to serve the North-West; and if he will make a statement outlining the attitude of the Government to such a project.

A feasibility study for an aerodrome at Lifford, County Donegal was commissioned by Donegal County Council in 1969 and presented to me by representatives of the council in February, 1970. The estimated cost of the project was £250,000.

As a result of the subsequent examination of the case, Donegal County Council were informed that the proposed runway of 4,500 feet would not be suitable for commercial operations by any aircraft in the Aer Lingus fleet. However, this whole question is tied up with the matter referred to in the Deputy's previous question which involves inter alia the future development of Derry (Ballykelly) airport.
