Vol. 252 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Travel Agency.

18.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether the Government or any of the State companies under the aegis of his Department have explored the possibility of acquiring an interest in Cooks Travel Ltd.; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As indicated in reply to a separate question on today's Order Paper, the State-sponsored bodies engaged in Irish tourism are jointly examining the general question of the selling arrangements for Irish tourism. In connection with this examination, the possible advantages of acquiring an interest in Thomas Cook and Son Ltd. are being considered.

19.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what steps, if any, have been taken towards the setting up of a national travel agency; and if he will make a statement outlining his views on the need for and feasibility of such an agency.

No steps have been taken to set up a national travel agency. A decision in relation to such a development would have to be based on a full examination of the need for and feasibility of such an agency. An examination of this kind has not been carried out, but Bord Fáilte, in conjunction with the other State-sponsored bodies engaged in Irish tourism, are at present drawing up terms of reference for a study of the selling operations of the various interests. This study will include, inter alia, the need for and feasibility of a national travel agency.

Mr. O'Donnell

Could the Minister say whether or not an independent feasibility study has been carried out by consultants? Have independent consultants been called in or are they about to be called in to examine the feasibility of a national travel agency?

There are consultants being called in by the State-sponsored bodies engaged in Irish travel.
