Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Services

159.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs how many are on the waiting list for telephones in South Kerry; and how long they have been waiting for them.

There are 225 applications on hands for the area in question. Of these 10 were received in 1969, 130 in 1970 and 85 this year.

160.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs how many are on the waiting list for telephones in West Limerick; and how long they have been waiting for them.

There are 105 applications on hands for the area in question, 35 of which were received in 1970 and 70 in 1971.

161.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is expected that automatic telephone services will be installed in County Donegal; if he is aware of a resolution submitted by Donegal County Council requesting immediate telephone services; and if he will give sympathetic consideration to early installation of such telephone services.

I am aware that a resolution was adopted by the Donegal County Council at its meeting on 31st May requesting the provision of automatic telephone service in County Donegal.

In the north Donegal area Letterkenny, Lifford, Carndonagh, Moville, Buncrana, Raphoe and Ballybofey are included in the list of exchanges planned to be converted to automatic working before the end of 1974. The primary centre will be at Letterkenny which will be an automanual exchange and this exchange must be provided before the others can be changed over to the automatic system. A site for the new exchange building at Letterkenny has been acquired and the design and planning of the building is proceeding.

In the south Donegal area both Donegal and Killybegs are also included in the list of exchanges to be converted to automatic working before the end of 1974. Donegal automatic exchange will be the switching centre for the automatic exchange at Killybegs and must, therefore, be completed first. A suitable site for the automatic exchange in Donegal town has not yet been acquired.

Forecasts for conversion of the remaining manual exchanges in County Donegal cannot be given at this stage.
