asked the Minister for Defence the number of D and E class military service pensioners; the total sum paid in pensions to them; the number in receipt of special allowances; and the amount of such special allowances.

The number of Grade D and Grade E pensioners on pay on 30th June, 1971, under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, was 5,933 and the total annual cost is £389,500. The number of these pensioners who are also in receipt of special allowances is 1,261 and the annual cost of these allowances is £130,000.
