Vol. 257 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Heating.

71.

asked the Minister for Education the approximate total number of national schools not equipped with electric current and the number heated by open fire.

It is estimated that about 650 of the 3,929 national schools are not equipped with electric current and that some 1,200 are heated by open fires. The survey to which I made reference earlier this week will also include the obtaining of up-to-date information on these two matters.

Is there Departmental policy in regard to open heating or electrical current?

I would say this is probably a matter for the managers.

Is there not Departmental policy on the matter?

No. It is a function of the Board of Works and the managers.
