Vol. 258 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - General Practitioner Services.

14.

asked the Minister for Health what estimate has been made of the number of visits per annum a general practitioner providing services under the Health Act, 1970, is likely to receive in his surgery from persons entitled to benefit on foot of medical cards.

It is estimated that a person eligible for the family doctor service under the proposed choice of doctor scheme will, on average, receive 3.5 consultations per annum. These include surgery and domiciliary consultations. The proportion of surgery to domiciliary services varies widely depending on the medical practitioner but for the purposes of the new scheme an average ratio of four surgery consultations to one domiciliary consultation has been assumed.
