Vol. 260 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Day of Commemoration.

100.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is satisfied that the designation of Easter Sunday as the National Day of Commemoration is satisfactory; whether any advance has been made towards making this day and the ceremonies associated with it a sign of reconciliation.

Easter Sunday is set apart as a special day on which the State celebrates the securing of independence and honours all who took part in the struggle to achieve it. I am satisfied that this arrangement is a sound one as it avoids the difficulties which would arise in selecting individual anniversaries for commemoration by the State.

I am not clear as to what the Deputy has in mind in the last part of his question.
