Vol. 261 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lamb Exports to Switzerland.

62.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the amount of lamb exported by Ireland to Switzerland in each of the past three years and in 1972 to date; the tariffs, quotas et cetera which now have to be surmounted by such exports; and the tariffs, quotas et cetera which will have to be surmounted after this country's entry into the EEC.

The reply is in the form of a written statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Irish exports of mutton and lamb to Switzerland: 1969, 177 tons; 1970, 153 tons; 1971, 14 tons; 1972 (January-March) Nil.

There is an import duty of 40 francs per 100 kilos gross weight; this duty has been reduced until further notice to 10 francs per 100 kilos for all mutton except frozen offals.

While import licences are not required imports are related to purchases of home lamb when Swiss lamb is in surplus.

Tariff and import arrangements for Irish lamb into Switzerland will not be affected by this country's accession to the EEC.

Can the Minister say if our situation so far as the Swiss market is concerned will be affected by entry into the EEC?

No. The tariff and import arrangements for Irish lamb into Switzerland will not be affected by our entry into the EEC.
