Vol. 262 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anti-Litter Regulations.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of persons prosecuted by Dublin Corporation for contravening the anti-litter regulations; and the number convicted in the past year.

I understand that in the past 12 months the Dublin Corporation brought two prosecutions under section 52 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, against people causing litter, and convictions were secured in each case.

I would add for the Deputy's information that the corporation, having regard to the fact that the co-operation of the general public is essential to the success of anti-litter measures, prefer to work by persuasion to encourage people not to cause litter in the city rather than to take legal action.
