Vol. 263 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Castle.

50.

asked the Minister for Finance the up-to-date position regarding the development and extension of King John's Castle, Limerick.

I take it that the development and extension of King John's Castle, Limerick, to which Deputy Coughlan refers is the proposed erection of a banqueting hall in the castle precincts.

The plans of the new building as submitted by the Shannon Free Airport Development Co. Ltd., were sent on 9th November, 1971, by the Limerick Corporation to the Office of Public Works who in turn sent them to the National Monuments Advisory Council for their advice and observations on the project. The National Monuments Advisory Council, who are an independent body under the National Monuments Acts and also have prescribed functions under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Acts, wrote to the corporation on 22nd December, 1971, stating that they considered there were some undesirable features in the plans and that they would be prepared to discuss the matter and possible alternative proposals with the developers. There have been no further developments regarding the project so far as is known to the Office of Public Works or the National Monuments Advisory Council.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary stating he got no reply to the communication sent to the Limerick Corporation on 22nd December, 1971?

No communication was received.
