Vol. 263 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Beef Scheme.

58.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will outline the measures for strengthening the EEC beef intervention buying system agreed by the Council of Ministers recently and their implications for Ireland.

The Council of Ministers of the six member states at a meeting on 31st October following the meeting of the Nine Ministers agreed on the principle of strengthening the EEC beef intervention system. The measures to be taken to implement this principle will be discussed at a later meeting of the Council.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state whether one of the proposals for the strengthening of the beef intervention system was that it should become an automatic intervention system similar to that in operation for cereals, that is, that when a price fell below a certain level the intervention measures came into effect automatically without having to be agreed formally by the Council?

There is no decision yet as to what measures will be adopted.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the proposals under consideration are such as I have outlined?

No. The matter will be on the agenda for the Council of Ministers and it is there that a decision will be taken.

I have no such information.

In other words, the Parliamentary Secretary knows nothing about it.
