Vol. 265 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Student Medical Card Holders.

26.

asked the Minister for Health the number of university students in Dublin who are holders of medical cards.

The number of university students in Dublin who are holders of medical cards is 6,322.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary happy that in the case of other people who are in need of medical assistance a means test is applied and they cannot have medical cards? In many of these cases the holder of the card could pay for medical attention and does not need the card.

Section 45 of the Health Act 1970 states that adult persons who are unable without undue hardship to arrange general practitioner medical and surgical services for themselves shall have full eligibility for the health services. That is the Act as I see it and I cannot change it just now.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any details as to the proportion or percentage of these students who are in receipt of State grants for university education.

I am afraid that question was not asked.

Are these students nationals and non-nationals?

I was only asked the number and I have given that.
