Vol. 265 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Smallpox Vaccination.

29.

asked the Minister for Health if he will comment on the statement of a professor (name supplied) regarding the hazard of smallpox vaccination.

I have seen the statement referred to by the Deputy which was embodied in a letter written to a newspaper in connection with the recent occurrence of cases of smallpox in the London area.

In general, I agree with his views as expressed in that letter. I would point out, however, that the letter was written by the professor when he was under the mistaken impression that the Department had advised persons travelling to London at the time that they should be vaccinated.

I have no control, of course, over the vaccination requirements of countries abroad in regard to travellers from this country entering their territories.
