Vol. 265 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Dairy Industry.

65.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the large-scale development and investment in the dairying industry in the north Kerry area, he will consider making special funds available to the ESB to carry out extensions and alterations to the power supply to the dairy farmers in the area.

I am informed by the ESB that they are not aware of any need for special measures in relation to the power supply to dairy farmers in the area.

A Cheann Comhairle, surely the Minister must be aware that there are many farmers in Kerry and elsewhere who are hampered by lack of electricity, in some cases, and lack of sufficient current in others from modernising their industry.

Hear, hear.

I think what the Deputy is saying relates more directly to rural electrification rather than to an increase in power supply, which is the information for which Deputy G. Lynch was looking.

I must say I am disappointed the Minister has nothing to offer to the many farmers who are prevented from going in for modern dairying because they have no electricity or because of lack of power.

That is not a question, Deputy.

I think the Deputy is pulling my leg. I am not Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

It is the Minister for Transport and Power who is responsible.
