Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Work Accident Figures.

42.

asked the Minister for Labour if there was a decrease in work accidents in 1972 as compared with 1971.

My responsibility in this matter is confined to workplaces to which the provisions of the Factories Act, 1955, and the Mines and Quarries Act, 1965, apply. Furthermore, in the case of factories, the law does not require that I should be notified of accidents which disable a worker for three days or less. In the case of mines and quarries the law provides that in the case of non-fatal accidents, notification is called for only in respect of accidents causing serious bodily injury.

On the foregoing basis, the following are the statistics available to me:

1971

1972

Fatal Accidents

30

24

Non-fatal Accidents

3,045

2,884

Total

3,075

2,908
