Vol. 267 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Dublin Industries.

83.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will specify the industries planned for the Dublin area and their employment content.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that there is at present one proposal, the details of which are confidential, for a new industry in Dublin.

Projects already approved for major expansion of existing industries will provide a further 800 jobs. The industries involved are tyres, electronics and pharmaceuticals.

In addition, re-equipment grants were approved in 1972-73 for 132 projects in County Dublin. It is expected that about 1,400 new jobs will be created as a result. Details of these re-equipment grants will be published in the annual report of the Industrial Development Authority.

Applications for a further substantial number of re-equipment grants are being examined. Details of these cannot be released at this stage. It is estimated that a further 1,000 new jobs in County Dublin may result from these.

The Minister may recall a similar question a week or two ago and he promised to be more specific in his answer this time. I take it the total potential is 2,000 jobs?

No. The total potential is 800 plus 1,400 plus 1,000, which is 3,200.

It is very low when it is considered that there are 16,500 people unemployed in this area.

There is a tyre manufacturing company in my constituency. Can the Minister assure me that this company will continue to expand and prosper?

That is a separate question.

They employ about 600 or 800 people at present.

I think I can facilitate the Deputy. I will repeat the second paragraph of my prepared reply. Projects already approved for major expansion of existing industries will provide a further 800 jobs. The industries involved are tyres, electronics and pharmaceuticals. I believe the tyres referred to relate, in fact, to the factory to which the Deputy is referring.

Though my colleague, Deputy Moore, will not approve of this question, are there any proposals for an oil refinery in Dublin Bay?

(Interruptions.)
