Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mountain Climbing.

125.

asked the Minister for Finance if he proposes to introduce any measures to increase the popularity of mountain climbing in national parks.

Mr. Kenny

The only park administered by the Office of Public Works which affords scope for mountain climbing is the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park, Killarney.

There is a mountain rescue service operating in Killarney.

I do not consider it necessary to introduce any additional measures to increase the popularity of mountain climbing in that area.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that half way up the mountain and behind Muckross House a great area has not been explored or opened to the public because the access to it is very difficult? I should like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary to do something to encourage people to climb this mountain to see the beauties and views of the area.

Mr. Kenny

No requests have been received from any mountain climbing organisation to introduce measures to increase the popularity of the sport in the district nor is it considered necessary to do so. Adequate information will, however, be provided in any future information material on the national parks. We can examine what the Deputy has suggested. I understand that the Deputy has already climbed up that particular mountain.

Not all the way.
