Vol. 268 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Energy Supplies.

28.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he can give any assurances concerning the availability of energy supplies in the long term.

The best information available indicates that known world energy resources will be sufficient to meet requirements for a considerable number of years to come. No assurance can be given, however, that temporary dislocations, especially in the oil sector, may not cause shortages from time to time.

To counteract a growing dependence on imported oil the Government is concerned to develop new sources of energy. A proposal to establish a nuclear power station is under consideration and a decision in the matter will be taken at an early date. Licences have been granted by the Minister for Industry and Commerce to a number of undertakings for prospecting for oil and natural gas in the State and offshore areas. In addition, this country participates indirectly in the efforts being made under the auspices of the European Communities to develop new sources of energy.
