Vol. 268 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Airport.

19.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether plans exist for the extension of runways and for the general improvement and expansion of Cork Airport; and, if so, if he will indicate their nature and when he expects that work will commence.

The adequacy of facilities at Cork Airport is kept under continuous review by Aer Rianta and by my Department so that any necessary improvements can be introduced in good time.

As the Deputy is probably aware, the extension of the main runway would be a very costly project because of the nature of the terrain at each end of the runway. The existing runway facilities are adequate to cope with the aircraft which operate into the airport at present and, while I would be prepared to consider the technical and cost problems involved if a clear need were established for a longer runway, no airline company has as yet made any case of substance for an extension.

Future plans for the airport contain provision for the extension of the passenger facilities. The actual date of commencement of the work will depend on the pattern of traffic over the next two years. There are also proposals for the provision of better cargo facilities and these proposals are at present being examined and are the subject of discussions between Aer Rianta and the prospective tenants and users of the facilities.

The Deputy may be assured that facilities at Cork Airport will be developed in line with requirements according as genuine traffic demands are established.
