Vol. 270 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Development Plans.

130.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that development plans for the Dublin area will prevent the type of problems that are associated with cities such as London.

I do not know what particular problems the Deputy may be referring to. The development plans for the Dublin area are prepared by the local authorities after a statutory process of public consultation. Their variation is primarily a matter for the local authorities. The present development plans for the area seek to ensure that Dublin will develop in an orderly manner to provide a satisfactory environment for the citizens of the area.

The Minister may not be aware that there is a high-rise flat building in the centre of London which the developers have decided is more economic not to rent out. I would hate to see anything like that happening in Dublin.

I can assure Deputy Lemass that there will be no high-rise flat buildings in the centre of Dublin which it will not be possible to rent out because there will be no high-rise flat buildings in the centre of Dublin.

May I ask the Minister whether the same will apply to office buildings?

The very same to high-rise office buildings. I will not allow high-rise office buildings where houses can be built in the centre of Dublin.

It is very important that the Minister should state that.

Very important.

Not more than three storeys.
