Vol. 270 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

40.

asked the Minister for Education when he expects that work will commence on the erection of a new boys' national school at Passage West, County Cork.

41.

asked the Minister for Education when work will commence on the construction of a new boys' national school at Passage West, County Cork; and when it is hoped to have it ready for occupation.

Mr. R. Burke

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 41 together.

My Department recently sanctioned a grant towards the cost of a new school at Passage West, County Cork, and the further arrangements for the erection of the school are now in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works.

It is not possible to state at this stage when building work will commence.

The Minister is aware of the local protest there at present regarding the condition of the schools and in view of that would the Minister push the Board of Works and ask them to announce an approximate starting date for the erection of this school as soon as possible and have the information conveyed to the people of Passage?

Mr. R. Burke

I have noted the Deputy's interest in the matter.

42.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that Renaniree National School, County Cork, is in need of urgent repairs; and if he will expedite the matter.

Mr. R. Burke

This school was built about 75 years ago, and water-flushed sanitation was installed in 1962. I am not aware that improvements to the building are urgently needed, but the Commissioners of Public Works are being asked to furnish a report on improvement works which may be considered necessary to keep the school in a serviceable condition.
