Vol. 271 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Dublin Educational Accommodation.

3.

asked the Minister for Education the present position concerning the proposed acquisition of suitable accommodation for students at Bolton Street College of Technology and the School of Distribution, Marlboro Street, Dublin.

Mr. R. Burke

The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee are investigating means of relieving accommodation problems in Bolton Street College and in the School of Retail Distribution in the short term. I expect that the committee's proposals in the matter will be submitted in the near future.

With regard to the long-term question of accommodation at Bolton Street, I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 28th November, 1973, to his earlier question.

There are no current proposals before my Department from the committee concerning a permanent building for the School of Retail Distribution.

Would the Minister accept that, while these examinations are taking place, the position in both these establishments is reaching disaster point?

Mr. R. Burke

Is the Deputy referring to the short term or long term solution of the problem?

I am referring to the existing position. In Bolton Street classes are held in corridors and in the other establishment they are held on landings.

Mr. R. Burke

As I have already indicated, the onus is on the vocational education committee to relieve the accommodation problem in the short term. The longer term problem, as I told the Deputy on the 28th November, will be the subject of proposals by the Government in the near future.

It is all right to talk about the long term and the short term but would the Minister indicate to the city of Dublin VEC that he wants something effective done in the short term to relieve the position which exists in these two establishments?

Mr. R. Burke

I will convey the Deputy's opinion to the VEC in question.
