Vol. 274 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Bridge.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will provide funds for the erection of a new bridge at Glenmore on the river Finn, County Donegal, as the old bridge is now closed to heavy traffic.

The erection of a new bridge at this site would be a matter for Donegal County Council to consider in the first instance. No proposals have been submitted to me.

Since the Minister proposes to take the initiative in many cases will he get in touch with the county council and ask them if they will do something about having this road open since it is a link with an arterial part of the county?

I shall do that of course, because we have already recommended the job should be done and the Department's engineering adviser recommends that it should be subject to grant. I shall ask the county council, as Deputy Brennan suggests, to proceed with the work.

Would the Minister state also, if the council are prepared to do it by direct labour, that they will be permitted to get on with the job immediately?

I have never refused local authorities permission to do anything by direct labour which they can do.
