Vol. 274 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in the finalisation of the Rathaniska group water scheme, County Laois.

The group were advised, in November, 1973, of the approximate amount of the local cash contributions required to meet the cost of the scheme, excluding State and local authority grants. However, I understand that less than two-thirds of this money has been collected to date. When most of the local contributions have been collected, my Department will allocate the appropriate grants and work on the scheme may commence.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction the tender received in respect of stage 2 of Ballina town water supply, County Mayo.

I sanctioned acceptance of a tender for this scheme on 17th April last.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received preliminary reports in relation to Swinford water supply scheme, County Mayo.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received preliminary reports in relation to Charlestown water supply scheme, County Mayo.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together.

A preliminary report for the proposed Swinford-Charlestown water supply scheme has not been submitted to my Department to date.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has sanctioned a tender in respect of Charlestown sewerage scheme, County Mayo.

Tenders for this scheme have not yet been submitted to my Department.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received contract documents in relation to Ballina sewerage scheme, County Mayo.

Contract documents for the Ballina main drainage scheme have not been received in my Department to date.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce regulations regarding the discharge of untreated sewage into the sea and rivers.

This matter will fall to be considered in the context of new legislation now in preparation for dealing with water pollution generally. I may add that the effluent disposal guidelines at present followed in this country take due account of the relevant factors, namely, the quality of the receiving waters, the minimum dilution available and public health and amenity considerations.

Could I ask the Minister if the legislation will be based on the report which was commissioned by the previous Administration?

And on other things.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government when his Department will sanction Kilkelly sewerage scheme, County Mayo.

There are no proposals before my Department awaiting sanction in respect of this scheme for which I have already approved contract documents.
