Vol. 276 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Studies.

72.

asked the Minister for Education the financial support that is available for post-graduate degrees in European studies.

Mr. R. Burke

There is no distinction between the support available for post-graduate degrees in European Studies and other branches of the Humanities in Irish Universities. Courses are financed from the general university recurrent grants and funds are not earmarked for particular faculties.

The European Communities offer prizes and grants for University these which make an important and original contribution to the knowledge of problems relating to European integration in order to encourage young researchers in Law, Economics and Political Science, including Sociology, Social Psychology and History, to undertake studies in this area.

Irish graduates are eligible to participate in these schemes.

73.

asked the Minister for Education the extent to which this country is participating in European studies; and the extent to which the National Institute for Higher Education is contributing to these studies.

Mr. R. Burke

European Studies is one of the areas in which degree and diploma courses are offered in the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick. The institute is also a European documentation centre and as such receives copies of EEC publications. The documentation centre is intended to serve the institute and the neighbouring region.

The universities as well as being European documentation centres have a large content of European Studies in some of their courses such as History, Languages, Economics and Law. Some of the University Colleges are planning specific courses in European Studies at various levels.

There is also a European Studies content in courses such as History and Geography in post-primary schools.

Teacher-exchange schemes, scholarships for study in Europe, involvement in such European bodies as the EEC, Council of Europe and the Organisation of European Economic Development and studies of particular matters in Europe by the trade union movement, representatives of farming interests and trade bodies are other aspects of this country's learning about Europe.
